HW: Career / 3 Posters

So I took the Jobs survey and my results were 1 Realistic. 16 Investigative 8 artistic 1 Social 0 Enterprising 0 Conventional. The elements I liked were a lot of science and music questions that I answered. Everything else is not tickling my fancy AT ALL.

Poster was easy to navigate the data that was represented in the color was very easy and clear to read.

What is global warming what are CO2 emmisions? Referenced from a 1896 article about a trend in CO2 deposits around the world in hotter areas are actually greater.
Boxes in the with the title referenced on them was very easy to navigate.

We are producing to many greenhouse gases. Will the global temperature rise 4 degrees C by 2060?
Design aspect that really help was the use of colors for certain key words. Also the hand writing was very neat which was also very helpful to the understanding of the poster.

Popular Science Worksheet

The article discusses that a microbe named Geobacter can be used to extract energy from mud which can be used in a fuel cell. The research team from the University of Massachusetts have observed the microbe can generate electricity when it is placed in mud and waste water. The species has been altered a few times so that it can produce more electricity.

The primary research that I feel could be used for this article could be that of the article entitled "The genome of Geobacter bemidjiensis, exemplar for the subsurface clade of Geobacter species that predominate in Fe(III)-reducing subsurface environments". The scientists talk about how the Geobacter has a large metabolic rate. The article also states that other environmental stresses affect the rate of its metabolism such that it can increase or decrease.

Learning Objectives

  • read and write scientific papers.
    • we read a lot of the dicussion sections. actually we read three of them and scored them so we can help guide ours and how they will be graded. we derived that we need to get a story going form paragrpah to paragph so they can be tied in correctly. organiation is also key to this paper. citations to. dont forget to site a class member ali!
    • also we did some work on materials and methods. what makes a good section? i think that in a good materials and methods why you did your experiment in that way. 
    • abstract - what i think it is. starts off by what youre doing and why. then how this will affect what ever. then results. then how it will help. BOOM BOOM BOOM. abstract.
  • examine and participate in the steps of observation-driven investigations,including crafting scientific questions and hypotheses, designing experiments, collecting and analyzing data, interpreting and presenting results.
    • we participated in class. in helping the abs and the m&m (methods and material)

    • we got together in groups butted heads on some papers and grading also for what goes in a good methods and materials section. also great to see how others view is a good and what goes in it. i personally thing they are incorrect and that mine is right. but hey we arent all perfect.

    • well for the methods and what goes in a good methods section i did pull up on the laptop top some new articles. just jumped on the web of science and searched fox. just so i can pull up a methods and materials section.

Learning Objectives

    • We spent a good amount of time int he lirbary looking up articles for our inclass work. Using eric was very helpful to see how a different search engine works for one that is used for "science" articles.
  • examine and participate in the steps of observation-driven investigations,including crafting scientific questions and hypotheses, designing experiments, collecting and analyzing data, interpreting and presenting results.
    • we created our hypothesis and research question and voted on it. i wish ours was picked i feel like it was more interesting then the rest. basically all the rest were exactly the same question just reworded. but ill live.
  • document your scientific experiences in a lab notebook.
    • we always document everything we do/learn in our lab notebooks.
  • conduct research collaboratively, participating in peer review.
    • When we got together with our groups it was cool to see (even though we were looking for the same articles) how different the articles we found were. its good to see that different people think differently and think of different things to search for. 
  • locate and review scientific literature related to a specific question.
    • this whole class period was basically based off looking for literature using a new databse and again searching different terms looking how to manipulate the search so you can pinpoint what you want to look at.

Library Workshop 2

Article 1

Wenz M, Wei-Chounn Y. 2010. Term-time employment and the academic performance of undergraduates. J Education Finance. 35(4):358-373.

1) This article talks about the amount of time used outside of school to finance their higher education. It supports the research question perfectly and can be used.
2) Students that work for financial reasons earn lower grades than students who work for career-specific skills.
3) They want to find out if this is a trend among many undergraduates or not.
4) This is essentially the hypothesis we have that we are working with.

Article 2

Callender C. 2008. The impact of term-time employment on higher education students' academic attainment and achievement. J Education Policy. 23(4) 359-377.

1) This article also talks about the relationship between the amount of time worked in higher education relating to grades.
2) Students do less well academically because of part-time jobs they take to support themselves while studying.
3) They are conducting this research to perhaps change policy or to find ways to help students.
4) Again this is basically exactly like the question we brought up in class. It will be interesting to use this article to support our hypothesis.

Article 3 


Pike G. 2008. First-year students' employment, engagement, and academic achievement: untangling the relationship between work and grades. J NASPA. 45(4) 560-582

1) This article uses statistical significance to see if there is a relationship between the two.
2) Does working affect the outcome of grades.
3) Like the past two articles this is essentially our research questions except THIS ARTICLE HAS FIGURES which are always nice to see a visual representation of data.

Article I'm not using

Crede M, Roch S. 2010. Class attendance in college: a meta-analytic review of the relationship of class attendance with grades and student characteristics. J Education Research. 80(2) 272-295.

1) Article talks about going to class and grades, not about working and grades. Not our question.

Cover Letter

The cover letter us used to address the messages left by the reviewer to better help you on your paper. It starts off by saying who is reviewing the paper and who's paper it is that is being reviewed. Now was wats interesting was that each comment had been addressed individually instead of as a whole. This really helps pinpoint what constructive comments are being issued. It also shows that you are taking the comments seriously by addressing each of them independently. If there is a comment that isn't necessarily used we learned to use the "I respectfully disagree....this is why i respectively disagree" method. Overall it is important to look at each comment made seriously because it can really help your paper.

Class Nov 1st.

Learning Goals (Prof's Labbook)

  • read and write scientific papers.
    • We all read the introduction sections of our three papers. We focused on pin pointing what a good introduction paragraph has. What ideas what concepts and how we are goin to mold ours to that. It helped to see how the scientists did their introductions, it gives you a real feel of how you want to do your own.
  • examine and participate in the steps of observation-driven investigations, including crafting scientific questions and hypotheses, designing experiments, collecting and analyzing data, interpreting and presenting results.

  • document your scientific experiences in a lab notebook.
    • We spent a lot of time going over how we are shaping our new format on how our lab note books are going to be graded as well as how they are written. I do kinda like this new documentation by learning goals it helps remember what we did in class and what we "learned" vs on just listing what we have done each day.
  • conduct research collaboratively, participating in peer review.
    • We worked in groups and started talking about what types of questions we could ask our other section members for the monday and wed class. We also go together and thought about what we did in previous classes and tried to categorize that under our learning objectives. It was fun to try and call out other students and try to knock off what they thought counted in the learning spot.
  • locate and review scientific literature related to a specific question.
    • The review of our scientific material helped us understand the introduction section. Reading probably a little bit halfway through the second paper you could really see what an introduction really was composed of.

I thank you for careful revisions and suggestion to my manuscript. I have revised the results section from the suggestions provided. I have taken each revision into careful consideration.

·         I would start off by giving a small amount of detail about what was going instead of jumping in straight to the results.”

We agree with the reviewer on this point. During the writing process it was understood that the most effective way to represent the data was to dive into the numbers. Consideration is taken into account that small amount of detail about what is going on should be presented.

·         “Also in the graph figure you want to explain what is being represented by the bar (or plots), just so if somebody that was reading the paper and had no clue about what was going on they would be able to clearly understand what the graph means.

This comment about the graphic is being taking under consideration. The plots of points on the graphic were something that did not even cross our mind. The way we looked at it was that a bar was a better representation of the data. The explanation of the figure will also be more thorough in the next revision of the text.

·         “I know that in class you fixed it but you want to add the value of your standard error both in the paper and to the graph figure.  If your going to start by talking about the figure I would have it presented right after that paragraph so the reader can look at it while reading the paragraph the is talking about it”

This point has been addressed in a revision of the results section. The value of my standard error is now included within the graphic as well as the text. I will move the portion bout the graphic interpretation to after the graphic. If it helps to view the graphic then read about it, we are all for it. The initial layout was having the paragraph before the graphic which we thought would be beneficial. I understand now that this can be beneficial to the reader if it is presented before.

·         “Your going to want to explain you p-value in plain English, if you do this like you do when you explain the graph and what the axis are, you be in great shape.  Your results section is doing great, I think with adding in those small things, and maybe looking at the sample 2 (as it relates to yours) you will get a nice grade.  Ali you have done very well on this, nice job.”




I recently e-mailed messaged you in October about a manuscript entitled “Marginal Growth of Nucella lamellose”. The recommendation was made to submit this text to the Journal of Ecology for the special issue about how different facets of the environment can affect growth in intertidal species. My text will enhance this journal’s special edition.

I have carefully taken into account these revision notes and will be adjusting my manuscript to adhere to those notes. I really do believe this result section will be a good addition to the journal special issue about how different facets of the environment can affect  growth in intertidal species. This research directly corresponds with the topic.

Discussion

Discussion

(Article 3)
I loved how the discussion section of the article decided to split it into three distinct sections. The first discussion was focused on the predation by the post-recruits of N.lapillus and provided many examples from other forms of literature. The images and figures help reestablish the points from the results sections and also helped us understand more what those figures mean. The next sections also are broken down to predation by recruits of N. lapillus and the other was the patterns of abundance and distribution of mussels and the role of whelk predation. The last section which was discussed gave a sort of a hint of another long term research that could be conducted based of the results of this study.

(Article 2)
The second article's discussion is separated by headlines as well. The language and feel of this article felt more personal and less scientific. They really took the time to discuss what the results of the study meant and how we are going to interpret them for further research. The end of the discussion wasn't really a good ending. Personally I feel like the end of the discussion should have wrapped up all the points made better.

(Article 1)
This articles discussion was packed with a lot of figures and tables. I felt like these should have been represented in the results section. The discussion though did reflect what all the figures and tables meant. The authors discussed other things that have affected the data such as oil spills. This was a good way to explain the numbers from the results sections.


What I have noticed throughout reading all of these discussion sections is that a well balanced discussion is the way to go. The proper balance of figures and discussion is necessary to help iterate the main ideas of the results you have conducted. The language also needs to be relate-able to the reader, knowing who the audience is going to be is important. It is usually the biggest part of the scientific paper. For our Nucella research though I don't anticipate our discussions being this long. We are focusing on only one subject. For me it is the marginal growth so the discussion of marginal growth with references will not be as long as these, but will be the bulk of my scientific paper.

Citation:  Gosselin LA, Chia FS. 1995. Distribution and Dispersal of early juvenile snails: effectiveness of intertidal microhabitats as refuges and food sources. J. Experimental Marine Biology and Ecology. 214(1):195-229
Why is it useful?  It is useful because it talks about difference species of Nucella and their habits of feeding.
What hypothesis do they test? Are microhabitats affecting juvenile snail’s mortality?
Why do they test this hypothesis? Because these researchers love snails!
Why is this hypothesis relevant to your research? This affects the marginal growth of SNAILS!

Berlow EL, Navarrete SA. 1997. Spatial and temporal variation in rocky intertidal community organization: lessons from repeating field experiments. J Experimental Marine Biology and Ecology. 214(1):195-229
Why is it useful? The organization of barnacles effects on how many of them are being knocked off by my snail! That is also relevant to my marginal growth!
What hypothesis do they test? Do the distribution of barnacles and bare spaces affect whelks and limpets?
Why do they test this hypothesis? They test this because they believe that whelks and limpets play a key role on patches of Semibalanus which are on rocks.
Why is this hypothesis relevant to your research? Yes I am actually sending this article to myself as I type so I can use this later. It seems to be very relevant to my research.

Why is it useful? This article talks about the predation of Nucella.
What hypothesis do they test? Can the size of Nucella be predicted from the diameter of the drill hole created while feeding?             
Why do they test this hypothesis? Because if the snail isn’t there anymore and you want to find out the size of the snail, you can do so by measuring the hole.
Why is this hypothesis relevant to your research? This can also help me look for things about the snail in which I will be discussing.

Grout JA, Levings CD, Richardson JS. 1997. Decomposition rates of purple loosestrife (Lythrum salicaria) and Lyngbyei’s sedge (Carex lyngbyei) in the Fraser River estuary. Estuaries 20(1):96-102
Why isn’t it useful? This article does not have to do with snails and marginal growth.
What hypothesis do they test? They test to see if they decomposition rates between the two plants in the river have different rates of decomposition.
Why do they test this hypothesis? They want to see which is faster so that they can manage habitats better.
Why isn’t this hypothesis relevant to your research? This hypothesis is talking about an estuarian ecosystem, while what I am looking for is a tidal ecosystem.

Data Analysis Work Sheet, and Blog Entry

Today in class we met in the computer lab to go over some review of statical analysis. We reviewed over the mean, median and mode and rediscovered how to find them using Excel.

Scenario 1 was a good help to look at how to use excel. I haven't done excel work since stats last fall and it really refreshed my memory. After class i went home and dug out my stats notebook to go over my notes in my hand writing to really remember how these things work. The class period was good working together with my peers helping each other out is always the way to go. There were things I also had to ask from people and trying to figure out how to use the error bars was also a little bit challenging.


1) Did going in for help effect scores?
2) If papers are reviewed by Becca prior to turning them in then the scores will be higher.
3) Going in for help will not affect the grade of the paper.

T-Tests

Thinking about the t-test

With what assumption does Hinton open the last paragraph on p. 78?
Hinton assumes that if the probability is higher than the difference in the sample mean, then the null hypotheses is true.

What is the null hypothesis presented on p. 78?
The null hypothesis is that the new scheme will produce better results than the older shceme.

What statistical tool do we use to determine “what differences would we expect between two samples simply by chance alone” (78-9)?
                We use the mean. We calculate both means and find the difference.

What is a t-test? (cite other sources if you need to)
                A t test will test the distribution of a set of data if the null hypothesis is supported.

What are the assumptions of the t-test?
                That there is normal distribution.

The example beginning on p. 83 is a related t-test, because the two sets of data come from the same people (the same group of students takes a test before lunch and after lunch). Summarize this example beginning 83 by answering the following questions:
1.       What question is this teacher asking? (the answer that she predicts for this question is her research hypothesis)
That the children in her class were better at their work in the morning rather than in the afternoon.

2.       What data does she collect to test her research hypothesis?
She collected data from math test which required the student’s concentration.
3.       Is this a one-tailed test or a two-tailed test?
This is a one tailed test.
4.       What is the statistical null hypothesis?
That the morning and afternoon tests will have the same scores.
5.       What level of significance did the teacher choose?
Significance level is p = 0.05
6.       Does she accept or reject her statistical null hypothesis?
She rejects the null hypothesis.
7.       Does she accept or reject her research hypothesis?
She accepts her research hypothesis because her students performed better in afternoon vs. morning .

In biology, however, it’s more common that we have an independent t-test. You can, as Hinton discusses, compare how men and women respond to a sleeping pill. Answer the following questions about the example beginning on p. 88.
  1. What is the research hypothesis?
That the effect of the sleeping pill will be different on men rather than women.
  1. What data were collected to test the research hypothesis?
Six men and eight woman agreed to participate in the study. Over two weeks they either took a placebo or the bill. They did not know which they were being given. The numbers of the placebo were compared to that of the sleeping pill nights.

Two tailed Test.

That there will not be a difference between men and women.

Yamane Gilman (2009)

Effects of Body Temperature on Predation Rates.

Background: The author talked about the predation rates of Nucella ostrina which happened to vary between treatments.  There is not really a clear reflection of just the procedure based of the results.
Question: The question is clear; the author is asking whether or not body temperature has an effect on predation rates among Nucella ostrina.

Method: They conducted the experiments with different exposure rates. One set was exposed to a higher submerged temperature where as the other set were exposed to a different submerged temperature.

Observation: They discovered that Dogwhelks which were exposed to a higher temperature had consumed 75% fewer barnacles. They also had less tissue mass then the others which were exposed to different temperatures. There was no difference in the consumption rates of the other two tanks. The exposed tank had a higher rate than the controlled group.

Conclusion: The conclusion is that the higher the body temperature the higher the consumption of barnacles become. Reading through there seems to be a difference between aquatic water tempura and aerial temperature in effects of functions.

These answers did take a little bit of time to just think about before they could be answered. I definitely had to read through the results section a couple of times to really grasp the idea.

Talks began with Copernicus and his idea of a heliocentric solar system.

It then lead into talks of forming a scientific paper. We looked at the chicken document to show us the format of a paper written in that style.

Formating scientific Paper

  • Abstract - short and sweet so that people can see what you have written to decide if they want to read on
  • Last paragraph of the introduction must be the most important. Should outline the hypothesis
  • IMRD
  • Acknowledgments are there to thank people that have helped you
The building of the cube exercise really helped invoke creative thinking on our group. We successfully completed the mystery cube that was given to us BESIDES the shading on that mystery side, which we missed. The one we built though was pretty awesome, had countries and capitals some multiplication it was just all out fun.

First Day of Class

The day started off with group work trying to identify traits of a specific artifact. An observing exercise to help us hone in our inferring skills. Our artifact was the StormTrooper Mr. Potato head which was missing its hands. The Potato head was clean and silly.

Next we were handed the syllabus to look over and ask any questions if anything needed clearing up. The point was brought up that the total points in the course added up to 90, which caused a in class discussion about where the extra 10 points should be divided up too.

After the discussion we had to predict the number on one side of a cube. The curve ball was thrown when we all realized it was the number 2 but not that it had a grey background. This was the point of perhaps your observation is wrong.
